The rule book governing Lawn Bowls went out the window recently, as the team from the TVNZ programme 'Seven Sharp' descended on the green at Northcote Bowling Club for their 2020 farewell.
Some showed genuine talent in delivering a bowl, Hilary Barry for example. is a natural....

Whilst others....

Really?
With the emphasis being on fun, they combined bowling with darts, table tennis, and beer pong, introducing a complex (but very fair) points system to determine a winner by days end.
Needless to say, the rules around the other events were seriously compromised as well.
Ken Moran, long time member at Northcote, has always been keen to change certain rules about bowls, particulary where playing attire is concerned.
No surprise that he paid particular attention to the ideas offered up by the Seven Sharp team, and it will be interesting to see what he starts wearing in bowling events for 2021...

He also ran a corner to corner event outside of the main event, and a $100 prize came out of nowhere to add to the excitement.

Well done Mary-Jane!
The overall result?
Well, the winners were...The Seven Sharp Team! They had a thoroughly enjoyable day, in pleasant native bush surroundings, doing stuff that they wouldn't normally have time for, and just being sociable with work mates.

Congratulations also to Jeremy and Brook for winning the overall competition, by just one point, over Paul and Frankie.
The trophy was presented to the winners by, yes, you have probably guessed, Kenny Moran.
He selected a trophy from the clubs cabinet, and promised to engrave the winners name on it....

So now, Northcote Bowling Club will have the names of Jeremy and Brook tatooed onto our Championship Mens Singles Cup, for future members to wonder "what was that all about?"
